Rhode Island Community Food Bank: Community Building Hour at HBS

Posted on Posted in Uncategorized

“One Kid Can!” That motto is what the Rhode Island Community Food Bank tells children how they can help end hunger in Rhode Island. During November, the Kindergarten classes invite the entire Henry Barnard School community to bring in food items to help families for the Thanksgiving season. Each grade (Pre-K to 5th grade) is assigned a certain food item to help the Food Bank. Mrs. Blackman, a representative from the Food Bank, came to speak to our school community to explain how “just one can” of food makes an impact to help families who do not have enough food to eat.
For the past twelve years, the Kindergarten classes have been collecting food to help the Food Bank for our Kind Deed project. From October to May, we collect a different food item to donate to the Food Bank. The Kindergarten children are learning how to “fill a bucket” for those families who are in need of food, as we follow the motto “one kid can.”
