Because interaction with materials and concepts over time is the only way that we learn, daily attendance at school is imperative to learner success. In the same way, punctual arrival at school not only keeps the learning environment orderly but prevents learners from growing discouraged because they don’t know what’s going on. Our school’s Attendance and Punctuality Policy (see Appendix A outlines our expectations for learner attendance.) If your child is absent, s/he must present a note signed by you to the classroom teacher the day of his/her return to school. We also ask that you call the school in the morning if your child is to be absent.
Drop-Off Procedures – Carport
To improve safety, the carport has been designated as a “NO CELL PHONE ZONE.” Drivers are asked to terminate phone conversations and put down their phones PRIOR to entering the drop-off zone. Parents dropping their children off in the morning are asked to be especially mindful of parents and students walking from Lot A to the school, those crossing at the stop sign, and school bus activity. (Busses are unloaded on the left side of the driveway, closest to the grass circle, and children are brought across the driveway under the supervision of a faculty member.) Drop-off spaces are numbered from 1-5. Before pulling forward into a space, please look to the faculty member directing traffic that morning to see if you are to use a specific space.
To improve safety, the carport has been designated as a “NO CELL PHONE ZONE.” Drivers are asked to terminate phone conversations and put down their phones before entering the pickup zone. Those talking on the phone will be turned away from the circle by the patrolman on duty. Those arriving to pick up HBS learners are asked to form a single line on the right side of the road by the Art Center and Roberts Hall, starting at the stop sign across from the HBS entablature. The faculty member directing traffic will direct you to a numbered point along the right side of the curve by the carport. When cars have stopped and it is safe for children to move, children will be released from the sidewalk to the cars. Please, don’t signal for your child to come to the car (this becomes a safety problem). Remain with your car and allow the children to come to you. When it is safe for your car to move, the faculty directing traffic will signal you to do so. When you do, please pull to the left of the driveway and then forward, so that we can bring the next group of cars into the pickup zone without delay. For the safety of the children and our faculty, please do not just pull out and drive around the other cars once your car is loaded. This creates an enormous safety hazard.
